SPAM Tags and Email Headers
To the average user the email headers appear to be very complicated and are difficult to follow. Most of the normal email header contains specific routing information that the email has obtained on its journey from the originating server to its final destination, your email account. In order to effectively remove SPAM from your email account you don't have to know the technical details of the headers or how they get placed in the email. Our systems that identify SPAM take care of that for the user. Some technical and curious individuals like to examine headers to determine how the email was evaluated and therefore we included a lot of detail in the spam headers. The simple truth is that there are only a hand full of header tags that need to be used to properly identify and eliminate SPAM from your mail account. These tags are:

TAG
DESCRIPTION
X-Host-Lookup-Failed
This tag indicates that the sending mail server identified by a specific IP address does not have a corresponding name associated with it. For example, if our mail server identified itself as 192.168.1.1 when a lookup of that IP address is performed the DNS servers should return a name (mailserver.lhhosting.com) associated with it. This is an RFC requirement and most large ISP's will completely refuse mail that does not do a reverse lookup, for example AOL.
X-SPAM-DNSBL
This tag indicates that the mail server sending the mail or the domain from which the mail is originating from is listed on one or more standard Domain Name Server Black Lists. There are many black lists however only a hand full are used by reputable ISP's. They are regularly maintained and monitored for accuracy.
X-Spam-Status: YES
This tag is a overall rating tag. Our SPAM detection system works based on a score that is applied based on many tests. Each test has a base score. Once added together if the overall score of the SPAM test meets or exceeds a threshold set by LightHouse Hosting, the email is marked as SPAM. This is a primary tag but should not be used to delete email.
X-Spam-Category: DELETE
This tag is again based on the overall score assigned to the email by our SPAM rating system. When email is tagged with this specific tag it has scored so high that it is safe to just delete this email.
X-Spam-Category: HIGH
This tag is again based on the overall score assigned to the email by our SPAM rating system. When email is tagged with this specific tag it has scored very high and the probability of this email being SPAM is very High. At LightHouse Hosting we use this tag to delete email.
X-Spam-Category: MEDIUM
This tag is again based on the overall score assigned to the email by our SPAM rating system. When email is tagged with this specific tag it has scored high enough that it is most likely SPAM however the email should probably be moved to a spam account and examined at a later date. Any false positives can be added to your white list rule.
Typical SPAM Header Example
X-HELO-Warning: Remote host 222.99.218.196 incorrectly presented itself as hamburgmuseum.de
X-Host-Lookup-Failed: Reverse DNS lookup failed for 222.99.218.196 (failed)
X-SPAM-DNSBL: 222.99.218.196 is listed at sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org (127.0.0.4, 127.0.0.5: http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=222.99.218.196)
X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "mx1.imgate.lhhost.com", has
identified this incoming email as possible spam.  The original message
has been attached to this so you can view it (if it isn't spam) or label
similar future email.  If you have any questions, see
the administrator of that system for details.
